The phenomenon is not new, invite people to take part in collaborative writing, the medium through which is. The Royal Opera House stared an online project on twitter. Right into their target group, because who is on twitter anyway? Of Course quality will vary, but everyday there is a round up, so that the libretto does not go in too many different directions. Nice experiment anyway. And with a lot of exposure so it seems. Excellent marketing!
